The neighborhood of Strathcona was once it's own community with origins in the 1890's when the railway was introduced. Many of the earlies structures were built on Whyte Avenue and fortunately many of these structures remain standing today. The area is also knows as Old Strathcona. It is interesting to see old photos of Whyte Avenue with people dodging around a streetcar line that ran from Strathcona to Downtown Edmonton across the river. Strathcona was eventually merged into Edmonton, and the rivalry of the two communities ended. One of the more popular spots on Saturdays is the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market. It is indoor and runs year round. The numerous cafes, restaurants and bars along Whyte Avenue helps this area be busy with pedestrians all times of year.
The residential buildings in the area consist of apartment style, townhomes, duplexes and many older historic two story style single family homes. Based on sales in the last 12 months, the condo market made up 65% of the market. The single family detached portion was 34% of the residential market. The oldest home that was sold was built in 1912 in the last 12 months. The median age of home that sold in Strathcona in the last 12 months was built in 1945. Many of the older homes built in Strathcona lie along the eastern edge of the neighbourhood in the Mill Creek Ravine area. This is a popular recreational area with many walking and biking trails that connect with the North Saskatchewan River trail system.
