The area was originally developed pre World War 1 in the 1910's as a professional neighbourhood that tried to attract young families. By 1945, only about 1/4 of the area had been develoeped. Between 1945 and 1960 another 1/4 of the homes were built. Many of the older homes have been either renovated or torn down and replaced with infills. The Westmount Architectural Heritage Area governs architectural controls for any new homes built in the area. The majority of homes are single family homes in Westmount. Westmount is located on the west side of downtown Edmonton and 124 Street borders the neighbourhood. This shopping district has become popular in recent years for it's art galleries, restaurants and cafes.
